Role of Mafs in cancer progression. The four large and three small Mafs could function as oncoproteins, and they facilitate cancer progression through promoting proliferation, invasion, metastasis, EMT, angiogenesis, and tumor-stroma interactions and inhibiting apoptosis in a variety of cancers. However, in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and MPNST, c-Maf works as a tumor suppressor through regulating apoptosis and metastasis
