ESCRT complexes play an important role in exosome formation and secretion. Exosomes are derived from intracavitary vesicles (ILVs) that are formed by the inward budding of multivesicular bodies (MVBs), which are generated in the early to late stage of endosomal maturation. MVBs can not only fuse with lysosomes resulting in degradation of the contents, but also can fuse with plasma membranes, release exosomes into the extracellular space and facilitate intercellular communication
