Role of IL-1β in the tumor microenvironment. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) is a cytokine that plays diverse roles in the tumor microenvironment: it promotes tumor growth and invasiveness, induces angiogenesis, and creates an immunosuppressive environment. Tumor cell survival and proliferation may be promoted by high levels of circulating IL-1β due to chronic inflammation. Targeting IL-1β in the numerous pathways it is involved in within the tumor microenvironment results in an overall anti-tumor effect
